Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s premier safari destination, located in the eastern part of the country along the border with Tanzania. Covering over 1,100 square kilometers, Akagera is a mix of savannah plains, wetlands, and acacia woodlands, providing a perfect environment for wildlife viewing.

Visitors can enjoy game drives and boat safaris to see the park’s rich wildlife, including the Big Five—elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos—as well as giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and hippos. The park is particularly famous for its birdlife, with over 500 species recorded, including fish eagles and kingfishers. Boat trips along Lake Ihema offer close encounters with hippos and crocodiles and scenic views of the park’s wetlands. Akagera National Park is ideal for travelers seeking classic African safari experiences in a peaceful, less crowded setting.
